Funchal sightseeing: choosing your gardens, fort and cable car

Funchal's sights fall into two camps: the flat old town by the water and the gardens on the hills above. Forte de São Tiago and the Paços do Concelho square cost nothing and fill a short walk, while Palheiro Gardens, Madeira Botanical Garden and Monte Palace Tropical Garden reward a cable car ride or a climb.

The cable car gets you to Monte in 15–20 minutes, gaining roughly 1,840 feet, and drops you minutes from Monte Palace Tropical Garden. That garden covers 70,000 square metres, so sturdy footwear matters and cloud can roll in even when the coast is sunny. Madeira Botanical Garden holds around 2,000 plants from Madeira and the other Atlantic islands, and the site is steep with stairs and slopes.

Give Palheiro Gardens two to three hours; paths climb and last entry is at 16:00. Museu CR7, by the marina, suits football followers and families and takes under an hour. Palácio de São Lourenço is shut for restoration, so read its facade from Avenida de Zarco as you pass.
